A Day 10/29/10
LAST DAY OF THE FIRST QUARTER.

Period 1 Geometry grades 10-12
Objective: Students will write biconditionals and evaluate statements as definitions in order to deductively evaluate statements given in the real world. Following the warm up, students comlpeted the 2-3 Daily notetaking guide, and started on the text assigment on p.86,#1-15.
There is no homework this (4 DAY) weekend.


Period 3 Math Studies IB grade 11
Objective: Students will evaluate the difference between theoretical and experimental probability. Following the warm up, students worked in small groups to do the investigation,and began the claswork assignment,Text H&H p.471, Ex 14G.1.
All work was to be turned in by the end of the calss period.
There is no homework for the long (4DAY) weekend.


Period 4 Honors Geometry, grade 9
Objective: Students will write biconditionals, their converses, and evaluate definitions as valid or invalid in order to evaluate statements given in the real world. Following the warm up, students started on the practice assignment. Any work not completed during class must be done over the weekend.
Assignment: Text pp. 86-87,#22-32,34-37,and 38.44.
No homework assigned for the (4DAY) weekend.

B Day, 10/28/10

Period 1 and 2 Honors Geometry grade 9
Objective: Students will use the Law of Detachment and the Law of Syllogism in order to draw conclusion from given statements in the real world.Following the warm up, Mrs.Dennard reviewed biconditional statements,requirements for a definition, and deductive reasoning The Period 2 class took the Ch.2-2 quiz. The class was assigned to completed the 2-2 and 2-3 Daily Notetaking Pack,and in the text,pp.82-87,#1-15.

Tomorrow is the LAST DAY of the first quarter!

Period 3 Math Studies IB grade 11
Objective: Students will conduct a peer review of the recent Quiz 6, and complete an error analysis so as to include this quiz in the first quarter grades. Following the warm up, Mrs.Dennard conducted the peer review and error anaysis preparation.
There is no homework tonite.
The schedule of the Internal Assessment Project will be distributed next week.

Period 1 grades 10-12, and Period 4 grade 9
Objective: Students will use the Law of Detachment and the Law of Syllogism in order to make conclusions in the real world. Following the warm up, Mrs.Dennard taught the new lesson on deductive reasoning, including the Laws of Detachment and Syllogism. Students who need to take Quiz 5 took the quiz today.
Assignment: Daily Notetaking Guide for Ch 2-3 done in class, and text p.82-87, #1-15.
Homework: Back of the warm up #10.

THIS IS THE LAST WEEK OF THE FIRST QUARTER!


Period 3 Math Studies IB grade 11
Objective: Students will solve probability problems of equally likely events, the simple probability of an event, and the probability of a complementary event. (3.8)
Following the warm up, Mrs.Dennard answered questions about the homework (H&H p.421, Ex14C) and taught the new lesson.
Assignment: Text H&H p.462-464,Ex.14D (done in class) and Ex 14E on pp.465-466

Tomorrow we will do a peer review of the Quiz #6.

B Day 10/26/10

Periods 1 and 2 grade 9
Objective: Students will write biconditional and recognize good definitions in order to evaluate definitions used in American Manual Letters.
Mrs. Dennard was out ill last Friday, and had a dead car battery this morning, so she was not in class for the last 2 classes.
Students should be prepared to take the quiz on Chapter 2-2 if they have not already done so. Any students who has not taken the Unit 1 TEST must take it on Thursday during class.
Assignment: Using the Geometry Notetaking Guide, complete pp 31-33.
We will resume class with Chap 2-3.

Note*** This is the last week of the first quarter. All grades will be final at COB 10/29/10 for my classes.

Period 3 Math Studies IB grade 11
Objective: Students will demonstrate mastery in constructing truth tables, distinguishing between disjunction snd exclusive disjunction, implication and related concepts, and contradiction, tautology, and logical equivalencein a quiz.
Students completed the warm up, and then Mrs. Dennard arrived to distribute the quiz. We will have a peer review on this quiz during class tomorrow.
Assignment: H&H pp 460-461 Exercise 14C.

Period 1 grades 10-12 and 4 grade 9
Objective:Students will write biconditional statements and recognize good definitions in order to evaluate definitions of letteres used in the American Manual Alphabet and in Ex.36-40. Following the warm up, Mrs. Dennard assigned students to complete the Chapter 2 review pack and Enrichment Assignment. Period 4 took the quiz on the material today, Period 1 will take the quiz on Wednesday.
Homework: PP.81 #50-54 (multiple choice),and p.82 "Check the Skills Yu'll Need" #1-6.

Period 3 Math Studies grade 11
Obkective:Students will construct truth tables to evaluate contradiction and tautology and implication and related concepts such as converse, inverse, contrapositive, and logical equivalence. Following the warm up, Mrs.Dennard answered questions about the homework, and students put examples of truth tables on the whiteboard. QUIZ TOMORROW !!!!
Assignment: Complete Chapter 15 Review Sets B and C in H&H text (from Friday) and in the Oxford text read pp.140-148,and complete Ex 3.6 on p.144,and Ex.3.7 on pp.148-149.

Periods 1 and 2 Honors Geometry grade 9
Objective: Students will solve problems using biconditional statements in order to solve real world problems. Following the warm up Mrs. Dennard taught the lesson on biconditionals, and instructed the students to begine the practice assignment.
Classwork for Period 1 Text pp.79-80, #36-46.
Homework is Practice 2-2 back of the WU#9.
Classwork for period 2 Text pp. 1-12 pp78.

First Quarter projects were due today for B Day classes.

First Quarter projects are due for A Day classes on Thursday Oct, 20.


Period 3 Math Studies grade 11
Objective: Students will solve logic problems using logic symbols in order to solve problems of conjuntion, disjuction, and exclusive disjunction in truth talbes.
Following the warm up, Mrs. Dennard took questions about the homework, and explained the lesson on implication. Students were assigned practice in the H&H text Ex15D and 15E.

Periods 1A Geometry grades 10-12 and 4A Honors Geometry grade 9
Objective: Students will recognize conditional statements and write their converse in order to recogm=nize good definitions. Following the War up, Mrs.Dennard taught the lesson on conditional statements, the converse, the truth value, and the symbolic logic symbols for hpothesis and conclusion. Classwork practice was assigned, and students worked in small groups to complete the assignment. While students were wporking, Mrs.Dennard called each one to her desck to give them a grade report and discuss ways to improve their scores before the end of the quarter on Oct. 30.
Assignment: Text pp.68-71 #1-32. and complete Practice 2-1 on the back of the WU#8.
First quarter projects are due tomorrow! Make sure you have your rubric.

Period 3 Math Studies IB grade 11
Objective: Students will solve problems using truth tables and logical equivalence in order to identify a tautology and a logical contradiction.Following the warm up, Mrs. Dennard answered questions about the homework, and retaught the differences between the truth tables for conjunction (intersection), disjunction (union) and exclusive disjunction(disjoint)
Assignment: Text H&H pp 503-507,Ex.15C #1-8, and Ex.15D #1-8.

Periods 1 and 2 Honors Geometry grade 9
Objective: Students will recognize conditional statements and write their converses in order to construct good definitions. Following the warm up, Mrs.Dennard taught the lesson on conditional statements, and assigned the practice problems. As sttudents were working on the practice, Mrs.Dennard called each one to discuss their grade report to date, and what each one needed to do to improve their score.
Assignment: PP 68-71,#1-32, and Practice 2-1 on the back of WU#8.


Period 3 Math Studies IB garde 11
Objective: Students will solve problems using compound statements using knowledge of exclusive disjunction and its discinction from inclusive disjuction in order to solve real-world problems. Following the warm up, Mrs.Dennard explained the differences between conjunction, disjunction, and exclusive disjunction according to a truth table response. While students worked in small groups on the practice problems, Mrs.Dennard called each student to pick up the Unit Test, Quiz 5 and the latest grade report. She discussed with each student whataction is needed to improve their scores before the end of the grading period(2 more weeks in Quarter 1).
Assignment Text H&H pp.499-501 Ex.15B,#1-10.
The next quiz will be on Thursday this week.

B Day 10/13/10

Period 1 Honors Geometry Grade 9 (No 2nd period today due to PSAT testing)
Objective: Students will learn to recognize conditional statements and write converses of conditional statements in order to help them read critically certain statements in literature ie; Lewis Carrol's "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland".
Following the warm up, Mrs.Dennard taught the lesson on Conditional statments, including identifying the hypothesis and conclusion; find a counterexample, using a Venn diagram and finding the truth-value of a converse. Students were assigned practice problems, and worked in small groups to complete the assignments.
Today Parkdale held the PSAT for 10th graders. So, we had 1st period from 7:45 to 11:30. After the first 90 minutes, students worked on their 1st quarter projects, which are due one week from today.
Assignments: Text pp 68-70, Check Understanding questions #1,2,3,4,5,6,7.
On pp 71-72,#1-22 odd, and #23-32. Also done in class today was the Pracice 2-1 on the back of WU #8. Any work not completed in class is to be finished for homework.


Period 3 Math Studies IB Grade 11
Objective:Students will practice basic concepts of symbolic logic;identify the definition of a proposition, and write synbolic notations. Following the warm up, Mrs Dennard taught the lesson, which included implication(if p,then q),its converse, equivalence, negation, conjunction, disjunction, and exclusive disjunction. Students began work on Ex. 3.5 in Oxford,and we will continue this group of questions tomorrow.
Assignment: Read and outline: pp 496-499, and do Ex 14A.1 and 14A.2.
Next quiz on Thursday.

Period 1 Geometry grades 10-12, and Period 4 Honors Geometry grade 9
Objective: Students will demonstrate their level of mastery of all objective in Unit 1 "Tools of Geometry" in order to score well on today's Unit 1 Test.
Following the warm up, Mrs.Dennard answered a few questions from the test review pack distributed last week. Then the test was handed out to students.
There is no homework tonight.


Period 3 Math Studies IB grade 11
Objective: Students will identify sample space for events and understand basic concepts of symbolic logic in order to solve real-world problems. Following the warm up, student were given more time to complete the coin tossing experiment from yesterday. Then Mrs.Dennard taught the lesson for sample space, mutually exclusive outcomes, complemetary events,truth value of a statement, and how to identify a proposition statement from an opinion.
Assignment: Read pp 131 - 139, Complete exercises in 3.3 and 3.4.

Periods 1 and 2 Honors Geometry grade 9
Objective: Students will demonstrate mastery in all objective in Unit 1 in order to score will othe Unit 1 TEST today. Following the warm up, Mrs.Dennard took questions from the Test Review Pack, and then distributed the test. Student had until the end of the period to complete the test.
Students are reminded to complete error analyses of Quiz 4 by Tuesday.
No other homework tonite.

ERROR ANALYSIS PROCEDURE
If you are working on an Error Analyses - remember that you must complete all 3 parts to get any score at all:
1. Describe the error. What were you thinking that led you to this answer?
2. Solve the problems correctly, showing all work.
3. Write out, in English sentences, the desciption/ explanation of each step you made in the correct solution.


Period 3 Math Studies IB grade 11
Objective: Students will solve problems using experimental probability,and construct tree diagrams in order to solve real world problems. Following the warm up, students were asked to read pp 454-459 and were give pennies to conduct the coin tossing experiments. By the end of the class, a few pairs of students had completed the coin tosssing and recording, but more of the same remains form most other teams. We will continue this experiment tomorrow, and also move onto probability using a spinner on a disc, and probabilities estimated from data sets.
Assignment: p.456,Ex.14A #1-4.

Periods 1 grades 10-12, and Period 4 grade 9 Geometry
Objective: Students will review and practice problems related to all objectives in Unit 1. Following the warm up, Mrs.Dennard answered questions about the homework, and distributed the Unit 1 test review pack. Mrs.Dennard reviewed about half of the pack with students (odd numbers)on the overhead. The Quiz 4 (on lessons 1-6 1nd 1-7) was returned in period 4. Error Analyses are due on Tuesday 10/12.
Homework: Complete the Unit 1 Test review pack.
and - Period 4 Complete an Error Analyses if your score is less than 40. Retesting for this quiz will be on Wednesday, 10/13.

The UNIT 1 GEOMETRY TEST is TUESDAY 10/12.



Period 3 Math Studies grade 11
Objective: Students will demonstrate skill in solving problems related to descriptive statistics, set notation and Venn diagrams in the Unit 1 TEST today. Students began the test as soon as they walked into the classroom today. They were able to use the entire class period for this test.

Objective: Students will review and practice for the Unit 1 TEST on Monday. Following the warm up, Mrs. Dennard answered questions about the homework, and in the text. Students received a copy of the Unit 1 Test Review. Mrs. Dennard went over the solutions for the odd numbers, and students were instructed to complete the review pack for homework.

Period 3 Math Studies IB grade 11
Objective: Students will review and practice for the Unit 1 TEST on Friday. Following the warm up, Mrs. Dennard took questions on the homework, and gave the assignment of practice: Text: H&H Review set B in the Stat Chapter - p 163-164.
In the Oxford Text, pp 166-169, Paper One # 1,Paper 2, #1,2,3; pp 340-348 Paper One: #1-7; Paper 2: #!-4.Students were advised to work on problems that were weak.
Error Analysis for Quiz 4 is due on Monday.

Period 1 Geometry grades 10-12
Objective: Students will demonstrate skills in calculating perimeter, circumference and area for squares, rectangles and circle, and calculate distances midpoints and endpoint in todays quiz. Following the warm up, Mrs.Dennard answered questions about the homework. The quiz was distributed, and students used the rest of the class period to complete the quiz.
The Unit 1 TEST was scheduled for Thursday and Friday this week, but given the results of todays quiz,the unit test is resceduled for Monday and Tuesday of next week. Tomorrow we will review for the unit test on Monday.
Assignment Chapter Review pp 61-63,#1-48 exclude 36&37.
Bonus assignment: P. 690 all but the constructions problems.


Period 3, Math Studies IB, grade 11
Objective: Students will learn how to solve 3-circle Venn diagram word problems in order to solve real-world problems. Following the wram up, Mrs. Dennard retaught the Venn diagrams lesson using a protocal for finding a answers on a 3-circle diagram. The recent Quiz #4 was returned to students. EAs are due on Monday.
Assignment: Text H&H p.83 Review Set B.
Tomorrow - Tree diagrams and review for unit test.

Period 4 Honors Geometry grade 9
Objective: Students will demonstrate skill in calculating perimeter, circumference, and area, and distance,midpoint and endpoints in a quiz on these lesson today. Following the warm up, students were assigned practice problems before the quiz for about 25 minutes. The quiz was distributed, and students took the rest of the class period to complete the quiz.
Assignment: p. 690, all except the constructions problems.
The Unit 1 test scheduled for Friday has been rescheduled for Monday. The next class will be a full review of chapter 1.
Unit 1 TEST will be MONDAY 10/11/10.

Periods 1 and 2 Honors Geometry grade 9
Objective: Students will find perimeter, circunference and area of squares, circles, and rectangles in order to solve real-world problems. Following the warm up, Mrs. Dennard allowed the students a 20minute practice session befor taking a brief quiz on the most recent 2 lessons. Upon finishing the quiz,students were instructed to complete the practice exercise on pp.52-59. And, if they had completed that for homework, they could begin the review for Chapter 1 pp.61-63. You may exclude #36&37.
Assignment Text pp 52-59, #20-55 odd, & 57-65.
Chapter Review pp 61-63.
The Unit i TEST is on Thursday - the next class.
I will be available on Wednesday after school for tutoring.
*** Note: 3 students were sent out of the room for disruptive behavior during 1st period, and Asst.Principal Robinson spoke sternly to the class about classroom behavior. Any disruptive behavior in the future will result in a referral for after school detention with Ms. Robinson.

Objecytive: Students will practice calculating and solving word problems involving 3-circle Venn diagrams. Following the war up, Mrs.Dennard answered a few questions about the homework. Several students went to the overhead to display and explain specific homework problems.
Assignment: text H&H Review Set A on p.82.
Next class: more practice on 3-circle Venn diagram word problems, and set notation, followed by a lesson on tree diagrams.

Objective: Students will find perimeter, circumference and area of squares, rectangles and circles in order to slve real-world problems. Following the warm up, Mrs.Dennard went over the formulas again before assigning classwork. During the classwork, Mrs. Dennard circulated the room and answered questions from several students.
Classwork: text p.55 #1-19.
Homework: Complete classwork, and do #20 - 32.

Period 3 Math Studies IB Grade 11
Objective: Students will conduct a peer review of the Quiz on Friday, and construct 3 circle Venn Diagrams of real-worl situations. Following the warm up, Mrs.Dennard distributed the quizzes, and began to put the key on the overhead. Mrs.Dennard answered multiplke questions on the grading, and quizzes were returned to the authors for a final check and discussion.
Assignment: Text H&H pp. 78-82, EX 3E.
Unit 1 Test on FRIDAY this week!!! BE PREPARED!!!

Period 4 Honors Geometry grade 9
Objective: Students will complete a survey by the National Council of Mathematics Teachers, and begin a review of chapter 1 in order to prepare for the test on Friday.
Following the warm up. Mrs.Dennard distributed the survey, when completed student started on the review assignment, which will be completed for homework.
Text pp.61-63,# 1-48, (delete #36&37).

B Day 10/1/10

Periods 1 and 2 Honors Geometry grade 9
Objective Students will find perimeter, circumference and area for squares, rectangles and circles in order to solve real-world problems. Following the warm up, Mrs. Dennard demonstrated a few problems from the homework, and taught the new lesson. This was largely a review of previous grades work, but the pracatice is good for retention. Students were assigned practice problems to work out in class, and a homework assignment. A few Period 1 students had some poor behavoir - they required many requests to stop talking and get on task. They were kept for 2 extra minutes after the bell because of this.
For these students: please be warned that the next time there will be detentions assigned for those who do not reasonably follow the teacher's instructions.
Classwork: Text pp 51-59,#1-19.
Homework:pp 52-59,#20-55 odds.


Period 3 Math Studies IB Grade 11
Objective: Studsents will solve problems of descriptive statistics, set theory and basic Venn diagrams in a quiz today. Follwoing the warm up, Mrs. Dennard answered a few questions from the homework assignment, and distributed the quiz. This took the rest of the class period. Quiz #3 from earlier this week was returned to students today.
No homework is assigned for this weekend.
Error Analyses for Quiz 3 are due on Tuesday, 10/6/10. Students are reminded to follow the EA procedure - especially where explanations are concerned- in order to receive any EA credit!
